David Martinez beats Marlon Vera despite opponent’s late push for a comeback win
David Martinez secured another big win to continue his bantamweight climb by beating Marlon Vera via unanimous decision at UFC Mexico City.
In front of his home crowd, the 27-year-old was able to bank the first two rounds by using his speed and timing to continuously land punches and disengage.
‘Chito’ Vera was able to have more success as the bout went on but like in several of his recent fights, it wasn’t enough to finish his opponent or get ahead in the eyes of the judges.
Vera wasn’t happy with his loss to Aiemann Zahabi last October, and it was clear that his coaches put a lot of emphasis on him being more aggressive in this fight.
Jason Parillo was honest when telling his fighter in between rounds that he needed to put it on his opponent to try and turn the tide or secure a finish.
It isn’t clear where the former title challenger goes from here after the same issues came back to haunt him in his fourth consecutive loss.
Martinez, who beat Rob Font last September, now finds himself in the mix with the elite at 135 pounds following just three appearances inside the Octagon.
