Merab Dvalishvili has an opponent for his RAF Wrestling debut – and it’s one of the toughest tests he could have asked for.
The former UFC bantamweight champion was expected to take a break from competition after four world title fights last year. And while his octagon return is not yet on the cards, he will be competing in wrestling on April 18 in Philadelphia.
Was Merab Dvalishvili’s reign in 2025 impressive enough to warrant an immediate title shot?
‘The Machine’ put the belt on the line a record four times in 2025.
After his signing was confirmed recently, it is now official that he will be taking on Henry Cejudo in a rematch of their UFC 298 showdown. The Georgian won that time around, earning him his shot at the belt, but takes on ‘Triple C’ at his own game in this fascinating second try.
Merab Dvalishvili and Henry Cejudo agree to RAF08 rematch
Two years on from their showdown inside the cage, Merab Dvalishvili and Henry Cejudo have agreed to square off once more. While the Georgian did manage to take down his more decorated rival during their UFC fight, he will have to try again in a straight wrestling match this time around.
Dvalishvili was in attendance for Cejudo’s triumphant return to the mat tonight in Arizona, watching on as his old rival defeated Urijah Faber with ease. And after the fact, they faced off during the Olympic gold medalist’s post-match interview with Chael Sonnen.
“Merab Dvalishvili you’re next,” Cejudo declared, recalling how the bantamweight ‘picked his a– up’ in their first meeting. “April in Philly, I’m going to spank you around. Let’s go, sign the contract.”
When Sonnen asked Dvalishvili how he felt about the idea, he replied: “I love it, I love the show, this is the best wrestling show I’ve ever been to. As you guys know I’m going to wrestle and I did take down this man.
“I will beat him in his own sport… I know this is a big challenge, but I am ready. Absolutely yes [I accept the challenge]… Let’s do it any time. Now I know you’re tired, so I’ll give you time.”
Cejudo then added: “If Merab thinks he caught me in my prime, he is mistaken. This is my first love and I am going to make you bend the knee.”
The pair almost got physical, but after the brawl that followed Arman Tsarukyan’s co-main event match with Georgio Poullas the pair were kept apart.
