Chael Sonnen labels late-notice fight a ‘step down’ for title bout hopeful

Chael Sonnen doesn’t think Carlos Prates’ replacement fight at UFC Kansas City is anything to write home about.

Carlos Prates was supposed to fight Geoff Neal at UFC 314 on April 12. However, Neal pulled out of fight with Prates due to an injury and the fight was pulled from the card.

There was even more bad news, as the UFC Kansas City suffered an injury to one of the main event fighters. Khalil Rountree Jr’s cancelled his fight with Jamahal Hill after suffering an injury, leaving the card without a marquee fight.

Luckily, Chael Sonnen helped get Prates an opponent for the event, although he doesn’t see it as a step up for the fighter coming in at short notice.

Ian Machado Garry won’t earn a title shot by beating Carlos Prates

The UFC Kansas City main event has been announced as Ian Machado Garry agreed to fight Prates, coming in on short notice to save the card.

However, Sonnen said on Good Guy/Bad Guy that he doesn’t think this fight will give Garry the title shot he wants and sees it as a demotion for the Irishman.

Sonnen said: “This fight does not propel him potentially into a title fight, but it could be the one before the one. I could see Ian and Prates, by the time the media and the build-up happens, and we all enjoy that fight.

“Based on how it unfolds, it could draw you into a number one contender’s match. But it is a massive step down for Gary, and guys get asked to do this all the time.

“You’re in a promotion, and as long as you’re in a main event, it shouldn’t matter who the opponent is, but it can change a little bit.”

Garry’s fight against Prates will be the main event of UFC Kansas City on April 26.

Garry was furious about not getting a title fight after his last defeat

Hearing that Sonnen doesn’t think this fight will earn Garry a title shot will do nothing to calm the Irishman down after his latest outburst.

Garry wanted a title shot at UFC 315 and let loose in a social media outburst, explaining why he deserved to be in the main event of the show.

Despite losing his last fight to Shavkat Rakhmonov, Garry believes he should be next in line to face Belal Muhammad and wants a shot at his UFC Welterweight Championship.

The admission that he likely won’t earn that fight by beating Prates won’t please Garry and he may consider taking such fights in short notice if this trend continues.
