Tom Aspinall, Ciryl Gane, Virna Jandiroba, and Mackenzie Dern all made weight for their championship clashes at UFC 321.
In Saturday’s main event, Aspinall defends his heavyweight title against Ciryl Gane. Aspinall weighed in at 255 pounds at Friday’s official morning weigh-ins in Abu Dhabi, while Gane came in at 247.5 pounds to make their fight official.
The co-main event weigh-ins also went off without a hitch as Jandiroba and Dern both successfully made championship weight at 115 pounds on the dot. Jandiroba and Dern battle for a strawweight title left vacant by Zhang Weili, who departs the division to challenge flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 322 on Nov. 15.
It wasn’t all good news Friday as two fighters missed weight. Flyweight Azat Maksum came in three pounds over the flyweight limit at 129 pounds for his matchup with Mitch Raposo, while Jose Miguel Delgado came in at 146 pounds, missing weight by a pound for his fight with Nathaniel Wood.
Maksum’s bout with Raposo proceeds at a catchweight with Maksum forfeiting 30 percent of his purse as penalty, while the fate of Wood vs. Delgado is still yet to be determined.
This is another bad break for Raposo, who is yet to win in the UFC, and—including Contender Series—has thrice made the walk to the octagon to face an overweight opponent. His coach Tyson Chartier pointed out the absurdity of the situation on Twitter.
“Contender Series, [Jake] Hadley missed by two pounds,” Chartier wrote. “UFC 302, [Andre] Lima missed by four pounds, now Maksum by three pounds. Here we go again. Is there anyone else with this type of ‘luck?’ Frustrating. Fight’s still on.”
