The decision to pull the plug on the fight came after disturbing allegations were made against David in an extensive lawsuit filed by his ex-girlfriend accusing him of battery, aggravated battery, false imprisonment, kidnapping and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Paul’s company Most Valuable Promotions immediately started searching for alternative opponents but with no one available on such short notice, the bout against Davis was scrapped and now the former YouTuber is awaiting word on a new matchup with designs on competing in December.
Just after the announcement was made that the fight with Davis was off, Paul took to social media to unload on his now former opponent for his behavior.
“Gervonta Davis is an actual walking human piece of garbage,” Paul wrote on Instagram. “Working with him is an absolute nightmare. The unprofessionalism, the bizarre requests, the showing up hours late to shoots. To the numerous arrests and related accusations and lawsuits. If you support this man, you support the most vile sin a man can commit.
“I didn’t want to give this woman abuser a platform to grow his fans and to grow his bank account. My company champions women. I’m so sorry to everyone involved. Mostly to the undercard fighters, to my team at MVP and to my team who worked so hard prepping for this fight. Sacrificing time with loved ones and kids just for this fool to lose his unintelligent mind again. It’s scary that devilish men like this can rise to the top of culture and sports, including in positions of power.”
While Paul’s statement obviously admonishes Davis for the allegations against him, this recent lawsuit was far from the first incident involving domestic violence accusations.
Davis was arrested back in 2020 on charges of domestic violence against an ex-girlfriend and then again in 2022, although the case was eventually tossed when the alleged victim refused to move forward with the case.
Davis was also taken into custody in July on another battery charge after an alleged altercation with an ex-girlfriend but once again the domestic violence accusations were dropped after the victim declined to press charges.
Now this lawsuit looms overhead and that was enough for Paul and Netflix to cut ties with Davis and cancel the upcoming fight.
“I hope you people moving forward look beyond his fake streetwear pieces ‘SWAG’ and search for something deeper to be a fan of,” Paul wrote. “As for me, it’s onto the next one as always. Anyone, any time, any place.”
While nothing has been decided yet as far as potential opponents, Paul’s team has reportedly reached out to several possible opponents including former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou, who already turned down the fight, and a potential rematch against Nate Diaz after they first clashed back in 2023.
On that night, Paul won a unanimous decision against the former UFC superstar but it’s now possible they run it back in December.
