If Michael Chandler hopes to compete at the UFC White House card in June, he might have to start looking for a new opponent.
After UFC CEO Dana White previously shot down Chandler fighting Conor McGregor on the card, the former Bellator lightweight champion admitted it was deflating to hear that statement but he wasn’t giving up on potentially settling some unfinished business with his fellow Ultimate Fighter 31 coach. Well it appears all hope is lost after White once again addressed the potential matchup and confirming that as much as the UFC appreciates Chandler, the promotion isn’t rebooking the McGregor fight.
“No disrespect to Chandler,” White told The Pat McAfee Show. “We love Chandler. You don’t have enough time on your show for me to talk to you about how awesome Chandler is. You know how I feel about Conor and everything for the sport and this company. But that’s not the fight we’re going with.”
As much as Chandler has wanted that fight, it appears White has slammed the final nail in the coffin when it comes to matching him up against McGregor in June.
Obviously, Chandler could still potentially score a spot on that card but it won’t be his desired matchup.
That said, White also stated that as much as everybody is talking about fights potentially happening at the UFC White House card, the actual matchmaking won’t begin until Monday after UFC 324 is concluded.
White addressing the timing when asked about McGregor still appearing at the UFC White House card after spending months talking about his interest in making his long awaited return at the historic event happening on the South Lawn.
“We don’t have anything laid out. Nothing,” White said. “It will all start Monday.”
Let the speculation begin on the fights that could earn a coveted spot on the card but McGregor vs. Chandler is one matchup that is definitely not happening.
