Cameron Smotherman is doing OK.
On Friday morning, Smotherman was involved in a scary incident at the UFC 324 weigh-ins, when the UFC bantamweight collapsed face-first just moments after making weight. On-site medical staff immediately rushed to Smotherman’s aid, helping him up from the floor and carrying him off the stage before taking him to the hospital.
Later in the day, the UFC team updated fans, announcing that Smotherman passed CT scans for his head and neck, and had a few sutures before being discharged from the hospital. And on Friday night, Smotherman made his first statement since the incident, revealing that he is OK, and refuting the idea that his collapse was the result of a massive weight cut.
“Obviously, I’ve gotten a lot of messages, and I appreciate all of the genuine concern about me,” Smotherman said. “I am completely OK. I’m good. I’m not entirely sure what happened. I see a lot of people online saying, ‘Oh, it was a crazy weight cut,’ stuff like that. I genuinely didn’t cut very much weight for this fight. I came in pretty low, but even [over] the course of this week, I haven’t cut much weight.
“I’m not entirely sure what happened, and I have some more tests and stuff to take in the coming weeks to get to the bottom of it. But to all the people saying I must have done a crazy cut or something like that, I cut very, very little weight. I’m not sure what happened.
“But I appreciate the corner. I’m completely OK, and hopefully I’ll be back soon. I apologize to my opponent.”
Smotherman was scheduled to face Ricky Turcios in an undercard bout, but that fight was canceled following his collapse.
Smotherman joined the UFC in 2024, winning his first bout, a unanimous decision over Jake Hadley. He has yet to taste victory since then, dropping back-to-back decisions to Serhiy Sidey and Ricky Simon in 2025.
