Tom Aspinall issued his first statement since the UFC 321 fiasco.
On Saturday, Aspinall made the first defense of his undisputed title, taking on Ciryl Gane in the main event of UFC 321. Unfortunately, the bout ended in terrible fashion, when Aspinall was unable to continue after suffering a serious eye poke in the first round, resulting in a No Contest.
Aspinall went straight to the hospital after UFC 321, and on Sunday, he released a short video on his Instagram page, detailing his immediate thoughts backstage, and some of his hospital trip.
“All that training for that,” Aspinall says, speaking with Daniel Cormier backstage. “What the f*ck is he doing?”
“The left one was really deep,” Cormier tells him.
“They were both bad,” Aspinall responded. “He got warned twice before it! Twice before he got warned for it. **** did it again!”
The video then transitions to Aspinall in the hospital, with his father speaking about the incident.
“Mike Bisping, he lost his eye,” Aspinall’s father says. “A horrendous thing to think as a parent. I know what it’s like these days with people saying what they want, but if it’s your son, and he could lose an eye, and their health, and they’ve got children to look after, something needs doing about it.
Ultimately, nothing was done about it. Gane was not penalized and the bout was ruled a No Contest, with UFC CEO Dana White saying after the event that the promotion will look to rebook the matchup soon.
