Dustin Poirier may be retired but he’s not done being a martial artist.
That means the former interim UFC lightweight champion is still training on a regular basis and that sometimes leads to injuries. On Saturday, Poirier showed off a gnarly broken toe he suffered during a training session at American Top Team in Florida — and he even demonstrated it for the camera.
Obviously, toes are not supposed to bend that way.
Of course throughout his storied career, Poirier suffered all sorts of bumps, bruises and random injuries during his training camps but like so many great fighters, he battled through all of it to transform himself into one of the most exciting and well-liked fighters in the sport.
Poirier ultimately decided to call it a career after the UFC gave him a hometown fight in New Orleans where he headlined the event in a trilogy fight against Max Holloway.
While he already held two wins over the Hawaiian in the past, Poirier had his struggles in the third fight with Holloway scoring multiple knockdowns.
But Poirier could always give as good as he would get because he consistently found a way to fight back and turn the UFC 318 main event into an all-out war that defined so much of his legendary career.
In the end, Poirier lost a unanimous decision but it was almost like that didn’t matter because he left it all in the octagon and put on one last classic performance before hanging up the gloves for good.
That said, Poirier has teased there might be an opportunity or two that could lure him back for another fight, although it seems unlikely that he’s going to compete again.
Poirier retired with a remarkable 30-10 record with one no contest and he was a 10-time Fight of the Night winner in the UFC.
