Jake Matthews’ appeal denied, commission issues statement upholding Neil Magny’s win at UFC Perth

Jake Matthews won’t get his loss overturned after filing an appeal with the Combat Sports Commission in Western Australia after falling to Neil Magny at UFC Perth in September.

On Wednesday, the Combat Sports Commission confirmed to MMA Fighting that Matthews’ appeal was denied after the referee in his fight called a stop to the action late in the first round when he believed Magny was out from a guillotine choke submission. The referee ultimately made a mistake, and the fight was restarted with Magny eventually securing a brabo choke submission of his own in the third round to get the victory over Matthews.

Immediately after the event was over, Matthews filed an appeal, but the commission has now officially issued a denial and Magny’s win still stands.

“The decision made by the referee to award Neil Magny the win stands as final,” a Combat Sports Commission representative said in a statement to MMA Fighting. “In accordance with Unified Rules of MMA, a review of the decision can occur under the procedure of the regulatory authority –– in this case, the Combat Sport Commission of Western Australia (CSC).

“Under the CSC MMA Contest Rules 2019 a referee’s decision is final unless a mathematical error is identified in the scorecard. As no mathematical error is present in this case, the decision is in line with the contest rules.”

Appeals like this one have rarely if ever resulted in any commission overturning a result due to the discretion that lies with the referee’s call during a fight.

Unfortunately, Matthews was likely fighting a losing battle with his appeal, but he still attempted to overturn the result after the mistaken stoppage in his fight.

Now the decision is final with Magny scoring the submission win, and the loss standing on Matthews’ record.
