KSW to implement new weigh-in rule, deduct a point of overweight fighters

KSW’s final card of the year will mark the beginning of a new ruleset in the promotion to punish athletes that miss weight for their bouts, a point deduction on top of the traditional fine.

The Poland-based MMA promotion announced Tuesday that the upcoming KSW 113 card, scheduled for Dec. 20 in Lodz, Poland, will be the first time athletes will lose a point in the first round of their bouts in case they are over the limit.

“This penalty will apply to everyone who will not make the required weight limit in their given time,” KSW announced. “Meaning during the morning weigh-ins on Friday and in the additional hour.”

KSW 113 will be topped by two championship bouts, with Paweł Pawlak defending the middleweight title against Laïd Zerhouni in the co-main event, right before welterweight champion Adrian Bartosinski closes the show versus Muslim Tulshaev.

Similar action was made by Brazilian MMA promotion Jungle Fight back in 2013, deducting a point if an athlete was 1 kilo (2.2 lbs) over the contracted weight. The athlete loses two points if they miss by 4.4 lbs, and three points if 6.6 lbs over the limit.

”If you start deducting points, you’ll see that fighters will start to worry about it,” Jungle Fight founder Wallid Ismail told MMA Fighting in 2018. “It’s interesting. I think it’s the end of the world when someone makes weight but his opponent doesn’t.

“Deducting points is the minimum they can do. This should be the rules. This is real punishment. I see fighters that miss weight and win close decisions after a hard fight, and they would have lost it if they were deducted points. Tell me, would you have fought the same way if you had cut those final pounds?”
