Patchy Mix blasts French commission for drug-testing debacle: ‘I should freaking go get a defamation of character lawsuit on them’

It’s fair to say Patchy Mix is not a fan of the French MMA Federation.

Controversy arose this past October when it was reported that FMMAF announced Mix failed a drug test, specifically testing for marijuana prior to his successful Bellator Paris title defense against Magomed Magomedov in May 2024. Mix had already left Bellator and joined the UFC, losing two in a row inside the octagon, when the French commission announced 17 months later that Mix’s decision victory would be overturned to a loss due to the drug test failure.

Mike Mazzulli oversaw the drug testing for that Bellator Paris card as the director of the Mohegan Tribe Department of Athletic Regulation, and the results came back negative. FMMAF overturned the fight result based on a separate drug test administered by the French commission, which reportedly came back positive for marijuana.

Mazzulli told MMA Fighting he contested it with their own test results, but said he never heard back from FMMAF, calling the entire situation “the most ludicrous thing I’ve ever seen.” Mix’s official record still includes the victory against Magomedov according to the Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports, and the 32-year-old fighter is now taking a shot at the French commission.

“I knew it was going to unfold because I had to hire a lawyer for this bullshit, but, you know, it was all because I just smoke weed,” Mix told MMA Fighting. “I’m an avid marijuana smoker, I live in Las Vegas and I was smoking a little pot before the fight. They told me I was totally fine to do that, but I guess the French, you know, they just had a problem with it.

“But, you know, it’s not overturned. It stands as a win. It’s an honorable win, Magomed Magomedov is good. And I beat him twice. So he’s got to live with that.”

Mix parted ways with the UFC in January and immediately joined RIZIN, where he moves up to the featherweight division to headline Friday’s show in Tokyo opposite Kyoma Akimoto. As for FMMAF still considering him the loser of the Magomedov fight in Paris, Mix simply does not care.

“Who gives a shit? The French Commission, that ain’t even real,” Mix said. “They have it as a loss. It’s a win. It’s not a loss [laughs]. It can’t be. I won the fight. I wasn’t on performance-enhancing drugs. You know, I should freaking go get a defamation of character lawsuit on them for doing that. I wasn’t on PEDs, you know? I smoked a little weed, now everyone thinks I’m a steroid cheat. It’s like crazy to me.

“But Mike Mazzulli did stand up for me. The reason why he had to is because I talked to him prior to the fight about this, and he gave me clearance, you know? He told me that they don’t, you know, weed’s not a big thing. I live in Las Vegas so it was gonna be in my system for 30 days. It’s not like I smoked before the fight. I didn’t smoke in Paris, you know? I smoked prior to leaving to go to Paris, you know what I’m saying?”
