Logan Paul says people have it all wrong about how his brother fought Anthony Joshua.
This past Friday, Jake Paul squared off with Anthony Joshua in a heavyweight boxing bout. It was a big step up for Paul, who not only gave up a huge edge in experience but also one in size, and the YouTuber-turned-boxer suffered the consequences as a result, getting knocked out viciously in the sixth round. Even before the knockout, Paul’s performance drew criticism as “The Problem Child” did his best to avoid getting hit by Joshua, circling the ring and, at times, appearing to turn clinches into takedown attempts. But Logan says that’s not what happened.
“I felt like if Jake’s cardio was better, he would have had a real shot at least to make it to the scorecards,” Paul said on his IMPAULSIVE YouTube channel.
“And everyone wondering about Jake’s strategy … Moving around the outside, everyone’s saying, ‘Oh, he ran the whole time!’ No, that’s boxing. That’s what Floyd Mayweather built his career off of. Especially when you’re facing a bigger guy who controls the center of the ring, the only way to properly win is stay on your horse, pivot, switch directions, make him miss. That’s the name of the game. That’s elusiveness. That’s evasion. That’s good.
“The one thing I did see Jake do in sparring, that everyone else saw last night, when Anthony Joshua would lean on Jake, he would go to his knee. Now, most people thought, ‘Oh, Jake’s trying to take him down.’ He’s not trying to take Anthony Joshua down. I saw this in sparring, and I asked him, ‘Why do you keep going to your knee when the big guy is above you and leans on you?’ He said, ‘They’re so heavy, me trying to hold them up wastes so much energy. If I’m under them and they start leaning on me, I’m just going to drop to my knee, because why would I waste energy trying to keep them up? For what purpose other than to get exhausted?’
“It’s a strategy that optically looks very bad, but it’s conservation of energy.”
Logan went on to compare Jake’s strategy to the inverse of one he employed during his exhibition boxing bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2021.
“Speaking of which, when I fought Floyd, part of my strategy, I go, ‘When this little f*cker is beneath me, I’m putting all of my weight on him,’ Paul said. ”And by the end of the fight, I heard Floyd Mayweather, who never gets tired, doing [heavy breathing]. He was breathing heavy, because that’s hard to pick up a person 40, 50 pounds heavier than you. So Jake didn’t even bother and just dropped to a knee. And then one time it kind of backfired to Anthony landing on top of him and Anthony’s knee [went into Jake’s stomach.]”
Whatever the strategy, Jake ended up getting brutally knocked out, with Joshua breaking his jaw in two places. But despite the loss, Jake is happy with his performance, and Logan is especially proud of his baby brother.
“I think one thing that is undeniable is your chin,” Logan said. “I mean, anyone who questioned whether or not you had a chin, I think the answer to that question was proven last night. Bro, you can take a shot. Anthony Joshua hits you with probably his hardest shot, that we’ve seen drop every other single fighter that he’s fought, and he hit you in the face, and not only did you not get knocked out, you dropped and said, ‘Wow.’”
