UFC Vegas 111 could be a big night for the Bonfim brothers, but one of them has already started the weekend off on the wrong foot.
Ismael Bonfim, who competes on Saturday’s undercard with brother Gabriel in the main event, missed weight by a whopping five pounds at Friday’s official weigh-ins. The elder Bonfim officially registered at 161 pounds, well over the lightweight limit, even including a one-pound allowance for non-title fights.
This is the second time in Ismael’s UFC career that he has missed weight. He also came in heavy for a fight with Vinc Pichel that was scheduled to take place at UFC Sao Paulo in November 2023. Pichel refused to accept the bout after Bonfim missed the mark by 3.5 pounds, saying, “I decided to take away his ability to fight and make money.”
Bonfim’s opponent Chris Padilla successfully made weight at 155 pounds. The UFC confirmed that Bonfim vs. Padilla will proceed at a catchweight with Bonfim forfeiting 25 percent of his purse as penalty.
In more positive news, Saturday’s main event welterweight contest between Gabriel Bonfim and Randy Brown is official, with Bonfim weighing in at 170.5 pounds and Brown at 171 pounds.
With the exception of Ismael Bonfim, the other 23 fighters competing at UFC Vegas 111 all successfully made weight.
